Jive Records Press Release |
This week, Britney Spears secures her status as an iconic superstar with the release of her newest album, Circus (Jive Records). Additionally, Spears makes music history by becoming the first female ever to have five No. 1 album debuts. Her sixth studio album, Circus debuts No. 1 in the U.S. according to SoundScan, selling over 505,000 albums and also enters at No. 1 on the Digital Albums chart. This is the second biggest album debut of the year for a female artist.
Released December 2, 2008, on Britney’s 27th birthday, Circus is a veritable international success as well: the album debuts No. 1 in six countries including Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and Top 10 in an additional seven countries. This follows the reception of her smash hit single “Womanizer,” currently a Top 10 single in 16 countries worldwide and is certified gold in six countries, and platinum in Canada and Ireland.

Circus comes one year after the release of the critically-acclaimed release Blackout, which has sold a respectable two million units world-wide to date. Circus is also earning accolades: The New York Times states, “…her new songs are crisp, cunning dance-pop…”; The Washington Times exclaims the current album is, “…the best work of Miss Spears’ career”; and the Associated Press says”…like any good circus, Britney’s version will leave you thoroughly entertained…”
Circus reunites Spears with previous collaborators Max Martin, Danja and Bloodshy & Avant. The second single from the album, the up-tempo title track, “Circus” makes its debut in the No. 1 position this week on the Digital Songs chart, giving Spears her second No. 1 song from this album. “Circus” was produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco and the video was directed by director Francis Lawrence who previously worked with Spears on “I’m A Slave For You” in 2001.
Spears’ upcoming arena tour, “The Circus Starring Britney Spears” kicks-off in New Orleans on March 3, 2009. In the days following her tour announcement on Good Morning America — on December 2, 2008 — fans purchased more than 400,000 concert tickets in North America alone. In order to meet the overwhelming rush for tickets, tour promoter AEG Live immediately added six shows in Los Angeles, Toronto, New Jersey, Chicago, Long Island, NY and Anaheim, CA, expanding Spears’ tour to include 41 concerts. Across the pond, Spears’ Circus-mania has also reached a feverish pitch, as six additional dates were just added at London’s O2 Arena, with more than 100,000 tickets sold for eight total shows during the first weekend of sales.
Britney Spears is one of the top-selling artists of the last decade, and to date she has sold in excess of 62 million albums worldwide: …Baby One More Time (1999); Oops!… I Did It Again (2000); Britney (2001); In The Zone (2003) and Blackout (2007).

Info On The New Tour |
Tour plans have begun to surface - and the happy Circus may not be so happy afterall.
According to TheSun.co.uk, who have been pretty accurate concerning Britney lately, have had a sneak peek at Britney's three-act show for The Circus: Starring Britney Spears tour.
"The first act sees the miserable star run away to join the circus. This mirrors her slide into unhinged behaviour. Her disturbing antics while suffering her meltdown are the focus of the second act, which takes place in the circus. The final act focuses on Britney’s salvation. She manages to prize herself away from the clutches of the circus to be reunited with her friends and family."

"Brit is seen having fun in this crazy world and falling in love with a circus freak."
"The finale features the diva emerging at the end of a rainbow after a spectacular indoor thunderstorm," reports the site.
Britney's public life has been on display for millions, and the tour will reflect that. "Britney is well aware of what a rollercoaster she has been on during these past two years," reports an insider, "and she is determined that her recent life is reflected in the shows."
"She thought the best metaphor to use would be the circus."
The show is a form of therapy, letting fans travel with her "through her fall from grace and her eventual rehabilitation.”
Top fashion designers Donatella Versace and Dolce & Gabana - who have supplied clothes for Britney's recent Vanity Fair photoshoot, have been called upon to design the costumes for the tour - all 12 of them.
The tour kicks off March 3rd, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana. |

PCD: Britney is 'Queen of Pop' |
PCD have known since October that they'd be opening on the Circus tour.
When Britney Spears launches her Circus tour next March, in a move befitting her big-top-themed jaunt, she's bringing along some big cats: the Pussycat Dolls.
The pre-eminent burlesque dance troupe of the pop universe will open all U.S. dates on the Circus trek, which kicks off March 3 in New Orleans. And while most of us learned this just last week, the girls in PCD actually found out that they were hitting the road for Britney all the way back in October.

"Some of us heard on Halloween night," PCD's Ashley Roberts told MTV News at this weekend's KIIS-FM Jingle Ball in Los Angeles. "We were all in our costumes, and we're like, 'We're opening up for Britney Spears! That's so cool!' I think we all screamed and jumped a little bit."
And after they finished jumping, there was the small matter of keeping the gig a secret until Britney announced it on her Web site. Now it's full-speed ahead for the Dolls, who are looking forward to hitting the road with the woman they've dubbed the Queen of Pop.
"She's such a legend. ... She's making her way," fellow Doll Melody Thornton said. "And she's the Queen of Pop, along with Madonna, and we want to follow into those footsteps. So, we're excited."
And though not all the Dolls have actually met Spears, they're already planning on making up for lost time and working with the pop star on a track.
"Most definitely," Doll-in-Command Nicole Scherzinger said when asked if they'd be collaborating with Brit. "We love Britney. She's a friend of ours, and she's a really cool girl. She's down to earth, so we support her."
"I've never met her, and actually she made a cameo in our video, 'When I Grow Up,' but it [was cut], unfortunately," Doll Jessica Sutta added. "I can't wait to meet her!" |

Projected Sales Are HIGH! |
First week sales prediction Britney Spears Circus to sell 470,000 490,000 copies!
As we head into the home stretch of the sales week, it’s all about the resurgent Britney Spears, whose Circus (Jive/ZLG) has far exceeded expectations and now appears headed toward 470-490k. Just what the doctor ordered—a feel-good story heading into the holidays.

The only other debut that will make the leader board is Akon’s Freedom (SRC/Universal Motown), which should wind up at #8 with a projected 90-95. Otherwise it’ll be the usual suspects: #3 Taylor Swift (Big Machine), 170-180k; #4 Beyonce (Music World/Columbia), 160-170k; #5 Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/IDJ), 150-160k; #6 Twilight (Chop Shop/Atlantic), 120-130k; #7 Nickelback (Roadrunner), 110-120k; #9 Now 29 (UMe) 85-90k; and #10 a dust-up between David Cook (19/RCA/RMG) and High School Musical 3 (Walt Disney), both trending toward 80-85k. Speaking of trends, next week’s Top 10 will break the recent pattern of domination by one or two labels and will instead be spread among 10 different ones.

Circus To Outsell Blackout |
Here is what HitsDailyDouble.com has to say about the early results of Britney's sixth studio album:
"Based on one-day sales reports, though it's still early, Britney Spears' Jive/ZLG album Circus, which hit the streets today, is on track to exceed expectations. Originally, pundits had it pegged at around 300k, but initial retailer feedback indicates it could go much higher. Give credit to radio airplay, stellar reviews, the MTV documentary and a widely seen performance on ABC's Good Morning America, where she announced her upcoming tour, for the positive results."
